Surfing in Fiji
Surfing in Fiji has a renowned reputation amongst the international surf community. There are exciting reef breaks (not for beginners), secluded locations and the traditional Fijian hospitality. Most reef breaks are around the islands, accessed only by boat so whilst this keeps the crowds down, it also puts the cost up.
Two of the best known surf breaks in Fiji have to be Frigates and the Cloud break found near Tavarua in the Mamanuca Group. Internationally famous, this reef breaks is considered to be among the most challenging in the South Pacific. Desperation and Swimming Pools also in the same area are legendary surf spots as well.
The Southern Islands, Beqa and Kadavu have some excellent places to surf. Frigates Reef is a superb left break with big barrels and long rides, while Serua is a long and hallow right-hand break. The Pipe is another well known left in the area.
To surf Frigates consider staying at Lawaki Beach House
When firing, Frigates Reef is a perfect, hollow, world class left hander you can surf all day, high or low tide. The prevailing wind is offshore tradewind and it gets swell nearly every day of the year so it is hardly ever unrideable.
Certainly the most consistent waves at Frigates come from the Southern Hemisphere winter climate -- May to November however, Frigates gets some of its biggest, most powerful waves from December through April, from cyclones originating near Northern Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Coral Sea. This time of year can generally mean longer flat spells at some surfbreaks in Fiji, especially out west, while waiting for these cyclone swells.
Cape Washington and King Kong breaks on Kadavu and Lavena Point on Taveuni also have some good surf as well.
The one thing you have to keep in mind while surfing in Fiji is that most of the reefs are offshore. While this means less crowded surfing conditions, it also means taking a boat to reach the break, rather than paddling out from the beach.
Off the main island of Viti Levu you can also consider Namotu Island
Specialist fiji surfing resorts are found on the main island of Viti Levu such as Matanivusi and Waidroka Bay Resort
You can hire surf boards in Nadi and experience surf day tours with Fiji Surf Company
Back packing with a surf board and on a limited budget consider the reef breaks at Danny's Village Homestay (right and left break), The Beachouse and the break in front of the Out Rigger Resort (only good 1 hr either side of high tide). They are all rideable but a good 15 to 20 minute paddle from the shore at high tide. Pay a few dollars and get a local to take you out by boat.
